Two OAR Scientists are Presidential Early Career Awardees for 2008

Dr. Michael C. Coniglio and Dr. Pamela L. Heinselman of OAR’s National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) are recipients of the 2008 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). This White House honor is bestowed on exceptional young federal scientists and engineers whose work advances the science and mission of their agencies.

Dr. Coniglio of the Forecast Research and Development Division at NSSL is recognized “for significant advances in the understanding of damaging straight-line windstorms, the development of novel techniques that have improved forecasts of these severe weather events, and the mentoring of students.”

Dr. Heinselman of the Doppler Radar and Remote Sensing Group at NSSL, is recognized “for significant advances in the collection and use of phased array radar data for improved understanding of the physical processes that produce hazardous weather and the mentoring of students.”

The PECASE award includes a 5-year grant of $50,000 to enable the winners to pursue respectively the “Evaluation of High-Resolution Weather Research & Forecasting Model Forecasts of Convective Mode,” and “Improved Understanding of Tornadogenesis with Phased Array Radar”.

Drs. Coniglio and Heinselman will be among those honored at a White House ceremony and reception in the fall. They will be joined by their colleague Dr. Dana Hanselman, NOAA’s other 2008 PECASE winner. Dr. Hanselman is a stock assessment scientist with the Auke Bay Laboratories, a division of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service.
